Lucy my last dog had SARDS (sudden aquired retinal degeneration syndrome) in the last 18months of her life. She was also showing symptoms of cushings and was having tests. Her fur became greasy looking on her back and I had to bathe her often. This is one of the symptoms of cushings. The tests showed she was on the borderline for cushings but she had all the symptoms. Ravenous thirst and appetite, pot bellied appearance, reluctance to exercise, greasy fur, scratching, panting, peeing lots and wanting to go out during the night to do it. SARDS dogs often develope cushings the two seem to go hand in hand. They can also develope pancreatitis thats what got Lucy in the end
If he has any of the above symptoms as well it may be worth having a word with your vet.

also added primrose oil tabs and 1/2 tsp of my cooking oil to his food -didnt go away forever but helped it subside -he must have had a combo dry skin fragrant allergy reaction.
I had to watch with carpet cleaners as well-made a difference. nothing I mentioned can hurt your dog -unless allergic to a primrose. lotsa luck..I use to hate to see him so miserable.
