Just noticed this thread for the first time today. Age 17 1/2 is when I lost my dear Holdsworth. You're right...it hurts horribly and there's not much you can do to prepare for it. I'm glad you could come here and share with us.
Take care and God Bless
Tara, Olie and Teddy's Mom (and Holdsworth and Shadow's Mom forever.)

I dont think we can ever prepare ourselves. When we lose one of our furkids, we are losing a much loved family member. Never ever easy.
I lost my dear Missy last November at age 17. Missy passed on to Rainbow Bridge due to liver failure. It has been over a year now and the hole in my heart is still empty. Life with Missy for 17 years was such a joy. I have and hold on to her memories. I cherish those great memories of such a little wonderful Cairn terrier that gave me so much joy and made my life complete.
There will never be another Missy and nothing can ever come close. All I could do is except she is in a better place waiting until I meet her one day. Life goes on we learn to live in a different way as we did when they were with us.
The pain eases but the heartache and empty feeling stays. When a pet means so much to us, it is only natural to miss them so much. There loss hits so hard as they never talk back, never argue, there just such loving creatures.
They give us there ALL. There the best! Hold on tight to bucks memories and getting 17 1/2 wonderful years with him is such a blessing. I know there life span is short but Buck gave you more than the average life span.
Just like my Missy 17 years but I wish I could of had another 17 but life dont work that way.
Take care, god bless and I will light a candle for Buck.
