(I wasn't quite sure if this should be in the Dog Park or not, so please move to the appropriate location)

My wife just heard on the radio and I did a quick search. It seems a lawmaker in Kansas wants to make the Cairn Terrier the official state dog.

I never thought of it before, but are there many cairn terriers in Kansas? :)

I think that would be very appropriate. But I am one who likes less attention. I like to think that Cairns are our little secret, as sillly as that sounds.

Me Too, and too much publicity will make the puppy mills come out with Cairns in larger numbers and I hate the thought of these sweet, innocent, angelic little dogs falling into the wrong hands.

Hubby is a puppy mill boy =( But obviously no one had purchased him, so maybe that shows there isn't high enough demand for it to get too crazy.

I do think, however, if The Wizard of Oz didn't cause a huge, ongoing demand (like what Milo and Otis did for pugs)...maybe nothing will!

I think it's a cute idea with Kansas and the Wizard of Oz.

But I'm in agreement with the previous postings. The more popular a dog is, the more of them end up in puppy mills. Addie's parents were rescued from one (and Addie barely escaped it, being born days after the rescue) and I can't bare to think of other dogs going through that horror just because a dog is in high demand.

And you look at other popular breeds like German Shepherds, English Bulldogs and Boxers and see how changing breed standards and irresponsible breeding has turned them into dogs that suffer far too often from horrible joint problems, breathing issues, and cancers.

I like that Cairn Terriers fly under the radar. Seems to keep them safer as a breed.

I'm with you there. I like being one of the elite few.

My DH told me this today. I thought this sounded like exciting news, but when puppy mills came into the picture I got kinda bummed. But honestly I don't see popularity being affected by something like this. I aggree with Meggie.

One of the local news stations got our names (probably from the CTCA website) and called me trying to set up an interview for their TV station. I declined for a number of reasons. Number one I am a very private person and would never willingly let a TV crew in my house. Second was the whole popularity/puppy mill thing. While Kansas is much better than it was regarding puppy mills I still would not do anything to possibly promote them. However, I really don't think it would make much of splash here in KS but I suppose it could in other areas as this seems to be receiving national coverage. Thirdly we have enough other issues for our legislature to work on. You know how politicians can be. Take the most innocent sounding proposition and turn it into a political dogfight. We pretty much had that when they chose the state grass! I did suggest however that they come to our kennel club training classes tonight and cover that and that I would have a couple of Cairns there. They were not enthused.

I agree also. I say "go for it Kansas." I don't think it will cause a Cairn tornado. heehee .... and it is so meant to be.
