Bearcat, it seems like Piper is a happy, well-adjusted pup. Cairns do great on their own. She may do well with a second Cairn, but there are no guarantees. I would go with your gut, and love Piper as an "only dog", and put your mind at ease.
I added my second Cairn for much the same reasons that you are describing, picturing the 2 romping together and sleeping sweetly, all snuggled up on the couch, keeping each other entertained. Never happened. While they get along fine together, they are not best friends, and I think either of them would be just fine on their own. (note -- both dogs were adopted as adults -- don't know if it is different if you add a puppy instead of an adult).
