I don't have any experience with cairns and small mammals but I do have experience with cairns and a cockatiel. Alex, our cockatiel, is now living with his third cairn. All of our cairns were eventually allowed to be in the house when Alex is out of his cage although he can't fly and normally walks on the floor to get to where he wants to go. We have worked with all of our dogs to introduce them and supervise them on leash until we were comfortable that they could be off leash. It actually pretty amazing because Bing, our current cairn, does occasionally kill mice and rabbits in our back yard and is very prey driven but stays away from Alex. We always thought that eventually the cairns were smart enough to figure out that Alex is family and you don't mess with family. We know it's a risk we're taking but it's funny to see the cairn and the bird nose to beak on the floor!
