Another person possibly introducing a 2nd Cairn (and nervous!)
Posted 12 October 2011 - 06:04 PM
A few concerns, as I noted in another post today he's pee pad trained, and I've been told he has some food aggression. I'm hoping at his young age both can be overcome.
Our original thought was if we liked him, and the initial meeting between he and Jagger went well, we'd bring him home with us. But now I'm wondering if having the two dogs in the vehicle together for four hours would be too stressful for them...maybe too close of quarters so soon after meeting? (note: Jagger is fine in the car. She typically wears a harness and sits on my lap, we thought we could put the male in a crate). It is a four hour drive each way so would obviously be easier for us to bring him home with us.
Any advice or tips on not only the initial meeting, but the possible trip home and the first few days?

Food aggression can be cured by hand feeding both dogs for a bit--make them sit quietly while you alternated feeding each dog. Then just monitor the progress.

Barely slept last night between my excitement and nervousness. The last few months we've certainly noticed a change in Jagger showing signs of maturity (although I do say that lightly...LOL!). We had thought we wanted an older dog to avoid the "puppy stage" but looks like we might be diving in again. We survived the first time and good to know I have all of you to help keep me sane!

I have nothing to add about food aggression since Packy & Kirby eat right next to each other with no problems. The hand feeding idea sounds like a good one though. Good luck!
