[Farcus]

I'm new to this sight. I was wondering if their are any earth dog competitions or clubs in the West TN area. I looked on line and wasn't able to find anything. The neatest dock dog club to me is St. Louis. Any help I'd appreciate.

Thanks. I was looking for something closer to Memphis. I'll look into the daschund club maybe they will do something out my way.

Yeah, it's a fact that these sorts of clubs can be scattered - for some years we considered a club that held events almost 200 miles away as 'local'. To attend lure coursing this weekend we commuted 3 hours each way, each day. And did those freeloading dogs chip in for gas? No way.

For earthdog, which is very labor intensive to set up from a site prep standpoint, most clubs have a site they use consistently. It may or may not be located near their nominal location.

CVDC closest event would be four hours and Murfeesboro is five plus from me. I'll let her keep digging for moles and muskrats at home. I've seen some live earth dog trials in MN, ND, SD. Have you done any of those?

Ugh, those distances would mean a weekend vacation commitment for sure. That's one reason we have so many clubs here ... to have more tests with less travel. It's not difficult to get a club through the AKC process, but it is time-consuming, and putting on the tests themselves do require quite a lot of work.

With respect to live earth dog trials, do you mean AKC earthdog tests or something different? For AKC earthdog tests, yep, quite a few... we've been putting them on for over 10 years, spring and fall, in our area as the Oregon Trail's End Earthdog Club, participated in the Greater Portland Dachshund Club summer tests before that (GPDC was the first club in the county to put on a licensed ED test) and now also as the regional Columbia River Cairn Terrier Club. We also entered an AWTA (American Working Terrier Association) den trial with our first Cairn, although that was 16+ years ago!

As to other terrier den trials, I've seen one "super-earth" which was primarily a traveling PR thing that made good television (and was also pretty instructive about how dogs move through the dens). And OTEEC once hosted a "Strong Dog" demo for a fellow who was hoping to round up some interest in a test for the larger terriers.

We've not done anything in the way of natural hunting, although we did once work with some dachshund friends to roust out possums from a derelict barn. I don't count the occasional field mouse that one of dogs will snatch while walking in the fields

I tried starting a DU chapter out here without much success. My town has less than 300 population so it's hard to get support and to much to do on my own. I work in MN and was talking to a vet that runs these trials and didn't ask but assumed they are not AKC events. They had mostly Jack Russell and Rat terriers with some other breeds. They would run their dogs at night on farms and in fields and woods. The trifecta was an opossum, raccoon and muskrat. They would help out farmers who had pests also. I thought I'd throw a bone out here and see if their was anything near. You never know. Thanks for the help.

This sounds like it is probably American Working Terrier Assn. AWTA is not active in my area and I know next to nothing about them. They do some judging of actual hunts but I don't know how it works.
I believe that the AWTA and also the Jack Russell Terrier Club of America have events very similar to AKC Earthdog. AWTA is open to all breeds; AKC is open to specific AKC breeds; JRTCA may be open to only Jack Russells, I don't really know.

Here's a muskrat that Farcus drug out of a hole. I shot it and my retriever retrieved it. Then Farcus wouldn't let him near it.

Yesterday while dove hunting I hit one but didn't drop it. It landed in a tree so I didn't release my retriever. My cairn is always on the spot when I shoot one and has found a couple buried in the grass. Yesterday this one dropped out of the tree and she retrieved it for me. I was pretty proud of her.

My Cairn goes crazy at the sound of gunfire, he loves it. He's pretty good at retrieving but can't take a line worth a darn. Oh yeah, he's about as soft mouthed as a crocodile!
We'll probably just leave the retrieving to the retriever.

Driving home from my sisters today we saw a couple walking a cairn and golden retriever. My wife was driving and I made her turn around just so we could say hi and show them are cairn. It's the first cairn I've seen in my area I think they were as excited as us. HA HA!
