Glorious spring weather met the start of the 2011 earthdog season in the NW. The first Washington test of the year was held by the Cascade Dachshund Club on beautiful Hathorn Farm on Whidbey Island.

Kona earned his first double Q of the season today (Master/Senior in the same test). Overall the cairns in attendance did very well and were happy to be barking at rats again.

Upcoming May NW Tests:

May 14/15: Oregon Trails End Earthdog Club (OTTEC) 3 tests at Turner Oregon
May 21/22: Puget Sound Earthdog Club (PSEC) Hathor Farm, Whidbley Island.

If you have a cairn terrier and want to check out and learn about earthdog activities you are more than welcome to drop in.

We had a bit of a practice session here on Saturday. From approximately 4:00AM 'til 10:00AM Griffin had a 'possum trapped under the house. I can tell you that his "recall" really stinks but he certainly "worked the quarry". I was treated to a steady cadence of barking for the entire time. BARK, BARK, BARK, BARK,....~every second for six hours! I don't know if they finally agreed to call it a draw or if there is now a dead 'possum under the house. I heard lots of barking but no real skirmishes. The positions changed from time to time but never anywhere that I could have intervened. Griffin finally came out very dirty and very tired but, otherwise, none the worse for wear. Since coming out he has shown no interest in going back under the house. Some support was provided by my Toller but it was halfhearted at best and he was thrilled to show me his "recall".
Griffin is entered in the Saturday PM and the Sunday tests at Belden's. I hope the old guy has his voice back by then! See you there.

We had another great weekend of Earthdoging.

Greg P, thanks for letting me play with your pup last night. That little guy's more fun than a barrel of monkeys!

bradl, thanks to you and Echo for filling the bye position so that Griffin and I could play the game yet again.

It was a good weekend for seeing old friends and meeting new ones.

George, I enjoy the social aspect of earthdog tests. You're one of the characters I look forward to always seeing at a test. Congrats on your weekend successes with Griffin! Awesome earthdog! Thanks for helping with Lou. I hope your arm is still in the socket.

Pardon me nosing in. I'm not Greg, but I'm probably here more often than he drops by. (Or you can PM him - if he's set to get notification of PMs that should draw him out :P )

AKC event search will find you everything in any state you would consider traveling to. It looks like everything left this year is in California. Speaking of which, a private site Duffy's Cavern does a superb job of tracking down and listing almost all west coast events. Dennis lists the upcoming California tests.

Event-giving clubs in your area include Puget Sound Earthdog Club and the Cascade Dachshund Club.

Further south, Oregon Trail's End Earthdog Club, Greater Portland Dachshund Club, and Columbia River Cairn Terrier Club. Earthdog is pretty much over in the NW until Spring.

Hope that helps.
