"Scruffleberry Blue did not make it...he died peacefully last night. We had him on a regimen of medication that might have helped him for a little while longer, but he stopped eating about three or four days ago, we couldn't get him to take anything, including the medication. He wouldn't accept anything, not even spoon feeding. I tried last night again to spoon feed him, he chomped the plastic spoon in too, and wouldn't accept a syringe. I was with him right up until the end, he just quietly passed away, some abdominal breathing, but no real struggle. We'll miss him, as I am sure you will or already have. But I think he had decided it was ime to go."
Scruffleberry Blue was my pet name for him. I fell in love with him the day he came into rescue, there was something special about him. He reminded me of Cornelius the elephant in the Babar books. He would give the dogs that were not doing so well a hard time, he usually knew they weren't doing well before I did, and he could be a little protective of his personal space, but he really was a very gentle soul. I am so glad that the man who runs the sanctuary was there for him when he died, and he tells me that Larry and Scruffy were able to run together and had made friends with some of the other dogs. I had moments of hesitation about sending him to the sanctuary, but I'm glad I gave him that chance.
