A sad email from the person who runs the sanctuary where I had to take Sammy and my fosters when I moved to Delaware last month. Scruffy's heart was in terrible shape. He had a grade 3-4 heart murmur when he came into rescue in June 2009, and it had progressed to a grade 4-5 by this summer, when he had an incidence of syncope, or collapse. He had started to struggle at the sanctuary, and their vet says his murmur was now a grade 6 (on a scale of 1-6).

"Scruffleberry Blue did not make it...he died peacefully last night. We had him on a regimen of medication that might have helped him for a little while longer, but he stopped eating about three or four days ago, we couldn't get him to take anything, including the medication. He wouldn't accept anything, not even spoon feeding. I tried last night again to spoon feed him, he chomped the plastic spoon in too, and wouldn't accept a syringe. I was with him right up until the end, he just quietly passed away, some abdominal breathing, but no real struggle. We'll miss him, as I am sure you will or already have. But I think he had decided it was ime to go."

Scruffleberry Blue was my pet name for him. I fell in love with him the day he came into rescue, there was something special about him. He reminded me of Cornelius the elephant in the Babar books. He would give the dogs that were not doing so well a hard time, he usually knew they weren't doing well before I did, and he could be a little protective of his personal space, but he really was a very gentle soul. I am so glad that the man who runs the sanctuary was there for him when he died, and he tells me that Larry and Scruffy were able to run together and had made friends with some of the other dogs. I had moments of hesitation about sending him to the sanctuary, but I'm glad I gave him that chance.

I'm so sorry for your loss as he seems to have been a real sweetheart. It's always difficult for us to lose our furbuddies as they fill our homes and hearts with so much love and laughter.

I hope your move went well and you are enjoying your new surroundings in Delaware. I know you will miss New Hampshire as it is such a pretty state. Be well.

I am so very sorry for the loss of your special boy, Scruffleberry Blue. What a beautiful nickname you gave him! It sounds like he made quite an impression on all who were graced to know him. I am so glad he was able to make friends with some of the other dogs at the sanctuary before he passed, as I believe the companionship of other pups truly enriches a dog's life. His sweet memory will live on in your heart, and in the hearts of others he touched.

I am keeping you in my thoughts and sending hugs to you as you mourn.
