You picked a good topic -- lots of discussion going on here about size and growth. I think your guy still has a few months of regular growth to go, plus another 6 months or so of just "filling out". My Zekey didn't gain any weight between 12 mos. and 18 mos, but his chest got too big for some of his harnesses! But of course, you'll find all different size Cairns here.
Check out this thread for more on this topic: Full size?

Demps is going to be 2 in October. When Demps came home he was 14 lbs and I was told he was a year - now he weighs 19 lbs. Bentley is maybe a little small, but if he's healthy that's ok. Did he come to you as a pup?

Cubbie is cute too! I just love Cairns of all shapes & sizes.
Me 2. They are all so beautiful. It probably doesn't help that I just got all his hair shaved off lol...he looks REALLY tiny now.....I'm going to let it grow out more in the winter...

They seem to reach their approximate height and length dimensions by a year or so, but they continue to "body up" for quite a while (perhaps most noticeably, their chests drop or deepen).
Ideal Size: Involves the weight, the height at the withers and the length of body. Weight for bitches, thirteen pounds; for dogs, fourteen pounds. Height at the withers, bitches nine and a half inches; dogs, ten inches. Length of body from fourteen and a quarter to fifteen inches from the front of the chest to back of hindquarters. The dog must be of balanced proportions and appear neither leggy nor too low to ground; and neither too short nor too long in body. Weight and measurements are for mature dogs at two years of age. (emphasis mine -btl) Older dogs may weigh slightly in excess and growing dogs may be under these weights and measurements.

Benny definately gained a few more pounds and filled out more even after his first birthday. I would say he gained at least 4-5 pounds between 12-24 months of age. My vet said he is the biggest Cairn Terrier he has ever treated.

I don't have a problem with that as long as the personality and characteristics are all there--it's just that much more Cairn to love. It is alot nicer to pick up a 13 pounder though!

We've had 3 cairns and never had one as an adult under 17 lbs. (unless they were sick). The first two had the same parents, and Taz is from different lineage. They all seemed quite "stocky" in frame to me, but certainly not overweight. And they have always been walked religiously, so they definitely were in shape. That's it -- must be muscle weight!
