I would like to know what is the correct size crate for an adult Cairn? Im buying a pup in a month and Im not sure what size the crate should be for the dog to get up and move around in it comfortably and still be able to do that when hes older. Could anyone give me the benifit of their experience and give me the rough dimensions of the size crate I need. Thanks.

A new pup! How exciting! Please post pics when the little darling arrives. B)

I'm not home at the moment to give you an actual measurement, but Buffy's crate is roughly 24" long, 18" wide and 18" high. She weighs about 18 lbs. and the crate fits pretty well - big enough that she can move around but small enough that it serves as a cozy getaway when she wants to be left alone.

Mine is like this one and is 30″L × 21″W × 24″H and when he was a very tiny puppy I divided it.
I just wanted to make sure it would be big enough for when he's full grown. I use a cover over it
to make sure he's cosy and he loves it.

Our two year old is still sleeping in the crate she was shipped to us in when we got her as a puppy. I believe it is either the smallest or next to smallest you can buy. Much depends on the size of your dog and what you want the crate to do. If I were going to leave the dog for long periods I think the larger wire pens would be better. If you want it as a place for them to relax and not get into trouble for shorter periods then the small crates are probably fine--the small size is convenient and gives the dog a snug "den" to retreat to.

Pegi weighs 20 lbs (yes, she's a larger cairn, but the vet says her weight is fine for her frame). She started with the smaller crate - it was the size for dogs under 25 lbs. When she got bigger we got the 36" one, which was good as it gave her more room, bad as it's harder to move the crat around the house. Now that she's a big girl she doesn't even use it anymore. She has decided that her crate is 1) chair in the den looking out to the front of the house 2) her blanket in the dining room next to my office where the floors have radiant heat and 3) anywhere else she decides to go.

We have this type of crate, 24L x 18W x 21H, for our 7 yr. old Bailey who is 18 lbs, and it is large enough. Make sure your crate comes with a divider so that you can keep your puppy in a smaller area while he is being potty trained. If he has too much space in his crate he will use one end for a bathroom, and the other end for his sleeping area. He only needs enough room to stand up, turn around, and lay down until he is potty trained.

I probably over compensated for his 'grown up' size, although he is getting big!! He weighs 13 pounds already and only 5 months old. Posted Image

Love the pictures of the Idaho Cairns and the crates. How cute. Dempsy has two crates - one just like the one in the Idaho picture - 17 wide 25 long - more than enough room. And a soft travel crate - 15 wide 24 long - which he also enjoys. Dempsy will be 2 in October and weighs about 20#'s. High - 20" on the hard crate and 17" on the soft.

Show and tell when you get your new baby!! :P

These are mine I got them both at petsmart. Angel's crate is on the right and she is about 12 or 13 lbs. I think her crate was about $25
Scotty's crate is on the left. I had smaller one originally but he couldn't really stretch out or stand in it comfortably. His weight goes up and down but is about 20-25lbs.This one was the next biggest size. I think it was about $40

Paisley had a smaller plastic crate that was my former dog's when she was little to sleep in. I had bought her a bigger wire crate for when she got bigger. She now only uses the wire crate because the other one I feel is just slightly too small for her to be comfortable. I let her play in the wire one when she was a puppy and she didn't start sleeping in it full time until she was about 8 months old. It is the 30 inch crate, and I would have gotten the 24 inch probably but the bigger one was on sale at the time, so why not? It is big enough where she has plenty of room to stretch out and I can still put food and water in there for during the day (only now that she is potty trained!) They say that if your crate is too big, the dog will use one side to use the bathroom on, and one side to sleep on. She never seemed to have this problem though.
