Methinks it's a demand for attention.

Sitting on couch with laptop or watching TV. Cairn pops up onto couch (does not have to go. has just done #1 and #2 outside, thankfully) and makes a tiny harrroooooooo. Ignore; am typing or watching. Cairn makes teeth snapping sound and huffs. Tiny black eyes boring a hole into my soul. I say "what"? Cairn snaps teeth. Ignore! Have bills to pay online! Cairn places paw on hand. Ignore! Cairn aggressively digs at hand. FINE! Petting! Back to computing/TV watchery. HARRROOOOO/TEETH SNAP/EYE DAGGERS/PAW TAGGING! Fine, more petting. Am petting roughly in hopes that Cairn will quickly get fill before computer hackers steal my VISA card number.

Later, when I would like to reap the rewards of Cairn ownership by daring to ask for a few moments of her time for snuggling, Cairn struggles to get away with force of a mini tornado. Bichon has rawhide; must get.

*sigh*

Same thing here: Buffy will do the stare/teeth snapping/yipping when I'm at my computer. If that doesn't work, she'll pop up on the side of my chair and tug at my sleeve. I invite her up on the chair with me - no dice. Finally I move to the recliner in the living room where she joins me for a few brief moments until she has to go see what Ziggy is doing. I really think she's herding me and DH into the living room just so she has all her uprights in a row. What a bossy little thing!

Yes. Redmon regularly grabs my hand when I am busy typing. Burning eyes, check. He is better now that he is older, and will usually give up with a sigh and content himself with snuggling into my chair beside me.

My version also includes the re-position of doggy body parts that said doggy would like scratched.... and some huffing to make sure i'm aware of the request... or mett will just take over my lap and stick his butt in my face to indicate he wants it scratched!

If I am sat on sofa reading or watching TV suddenly this cairn will decide to jump on to couch and climb onto lap and sit bold upright so that I cannot see book or TV screen as all I have in my vision is Holly's back!! I then have to give her the fuss that Madam demands! [for a small dog she can't half sit and make herself large!]
She usually picks an moment when I am watching the TV when it is really exciting and so I miss it!!

Yep, you just described my Murphy, aside from the teeth snapping. Murphy also sings a little forlorn-sounding "pay attention to this poor little lonely Cairn boy" song when I am typing. That, coupled with his soulful stare, gets me every time!

Cairns. Gotta love 'em!

Ahh yes ... Jock also! When I go to bed put on my reading glasses and grab a book to read seems to be the cue for Jock to sit on my chest, blocking out my view of the book. If I ignore him the soft growls start to happen with a strange humming noise

LOL as I was reading this. Sounds like my Miss Murphy. She does the same thing when she wants attention. It's kind of funny when she paws me and snaps her teeth, talks a little and her eyes get this C'mon mom, I need something and I really mean it look.

She understands some words (phrases) so if I'm not sure what she wants I ask her. I say.....outside pee-pee? or outside poopy? or play toys? and I usually get an eruption of excitement and a small verbal confirmation when I hit on what she wants.

Yup that's my Bailey. Scratches at my arm, pat...pat on head, more scratches on arm and laptop, pat...pat on head, jumps up beside me, scratches and starts to walk on laptop as if to say share. He doesn't make the noises thou just kisses.

We don't get the noises from the Cairn, but what we do get is the toy of the moment, put very close to hand or face (depending on human position in chair or on couch) and the non-stop squeak, squeak, squeak, squeak (ad nauseum) until we play fetch. On more than one ocassion the toy may be dropped on your head if you happen to be napping.

There have been a few times that I've wanted to finish reading or writing something, but I just cannot resist those shiny, little Cairn eyes staring at me.

My Cairn does not really know how to play fetch. It's very frustrating! I throw the toy, Cairn runs to grab it, but does not bring it back to you. Cairn eventually comes back to you and barks for you to go get the toy to throw it again. Hmmm, perhaps Cairn DOES know how to play fetch....

Another thing that drives me batty, and I've mentioned this before, is the door game. Bark, I want to go out! (trots out; door closes) Bark, I want in! (door opens; Cairn DOES NOT COME IN). Fine; door slams shut. BARK! Door opens; Cairn does not come in.

THIS INFURIATES ME! Cairn does not come in until I pretend to go to fridge for cheese. Will get cheese if I am feeling charitable. Most of the time, does not get cheese.

I have created this monster.

Ha ha! I'm really enjoying this! Zekey plays fetch perfectly, from his perspective. Only what he calls fetch, I call chase. Usually he accidently brings the toy back near me, and on the 2nd throw, makes sure he takes it far away!

I get the staring treatment, pawing at my leg to make me get up and ______ (give him a treat, go for a walk, etc.). But if I ignore this, he starts barking. Hmmm. Must not ignore Zekey!
