I have a collar leash combination that I really like. And more importantly Renny likes it too. At walk time, he stands still and looks up and I simply drop the collar over his head and we're ready to go.

It has a "double or slip loop" that allows the collar to act sort of like a padded choker and tightens if the dog starts pulling too hard. I bought it at Petco when he was a puppy and they apparently no longer carry this particular brand. The one I have was available as just a collar with a D ring to attach a leash or as a collar/leash in one piece. The collar only was around $12 and the combination collar/leash was about $ 25. The one I have is starting to get pretty shabby and I'd like to find a replacement.

My groomer didn't know the brand of the one I have, but said that it is similar to a "Martingale" collar. I looked them up on the web and they do look similar, but the photos and illustrations leave me with as many questions as they answer.

Do any of the Cairn owners here use the Martingale collar? Are there other slip collars available that I don't know about?

Any suggestions welcome.

Sounds like you are talking about what is sometimes called a "British Show lead" they come in both slip and martingale styles (although I have only found the martingale style at dog show vendors). Yes, I do use them, mostly at the beach...as I have runied too many leather leashes with sand getting jammed in the snap. I also use them when taking the dogs out of the crate (i.e. from the car into the house etc) as they are easy on and easy off.

I also try to keep one in the car, since they are adjustable (almost one size fits all) they are very good to use to restrain the occasional lost or stray dog.

I have a Martingale collar for my Silky/Shih Tzu, Ziggy. His foster parent gave it to us when we adopted him. I love it and keep meaning to order one online for Buffy.

When I first showed Zach, I used a chain martingale. After awhile I switched him to a thin choke chain because he responded better. However, for walking purposes and "in and out" of the car times, I love martingales. White Pine (http://www.whitepine...om/About_Us.cfm) makes amazingly soft ones that don't rip up the coat nearly as bad as others do.

I use one on scotty. The one I use is made of nylon and chain. But you can buy them with all nylon.

Thanks for the responses. It sounds like the Martingale collar is suitable for a Cairn.

I'm going on vacation next week and will check out some pet stores along the way. If I find one, I'll get it. If not, I'll order one off the net when I get back.
