Gus, the bigger Cairn can open our sliding Pella Patio door with his nose. I let them out, leave the door cracked 1 inch, when they are ready to come in, Gus sticks his nose in the crack and slides the door open wide enough to get back in the house... Sorry no pics at this time...Believe it or not!

Help with barking when someone's at the door

Our Bichon and our Cairn go NUTS when someone is at our door. They fly into a RAGE. We have a baby gate separating the part of the house between where the front door is and where we are usually the most (kitchen, basement). When I climb over the gate to get to the front door, my Cairn attacks me - usually jumping up and biting my leg as I bring it up and over the gate. I have tried the whole "teaching them to speak" thing and that doesn't work for us. They know someone's there before that person rings the bell/knocks and so I can't get to them in time to quiet them and once they're barking, you can't calm them down - I've tried positive and negative reinforcement. People come to our door A LOT! We live in a busy/neighbour friendly neighbourhood. It's starting to drive me nuts and it is really embarrassing. Sometimes the Bichon is behind the gate with the Cairn and sometimes it is at the front door with the Cairn left behind the gate (the Bichon is reliable and doesn't need to be gated; the Cairn doesn't have 100% run of the house yet - she's 17 months).

Does anyone have a Cairn that DOES NOT bark when someone is at the door and if so - did you train for this behaviour or is your dog "just like that"?

Dempsy loves it when cousin Trevor comes for a visit. They play all sorts of games. Poor little Dempsy has a heck of a time keeping up with such a long legged hound. Around and around they go. Over, under, up, down, in, out, back n' forth ... whew, Dempsy keeps up but he is more than ready to say good-bye to Trevor. Demps takes a nice long nap and is more than willing to snuggle with you after Trevor leaves. I take full advantage.

Big brother is watching

This morning Radar was full of energy and trying to play with Casey who had no intention of getting out of bed never mind playing with the little brat. Well before I could redirect Radar’s attention, Bailey stepped in the middle pushing him away from Casey. I feel he was telling Radar to leave her alone, she's not in the mood ~ I’ll play with you instead. Bailey has really made puppy training easy for us. Bailey's such a good boy!!

Cairntucky Derby

Well, there were no mint juleps, and I suspect on the gentility scale they were more NASCAIRN than Run for the Roses, but nevertheless the local Cairns has a great day at McIver Park at our club's annual Cairntastic Day. I didn't get any pictures myself, but a friend sent me this cute shot of four dogs coming out (or not) of the starting gate.

The blur on the left is our old boy Haggis - he was excited to be there and talked up a storm in the box, but after a quick exit he petered out halfway down the course and trotted back to the starting box. At 15, he's feeling his age but still remembers the thrill of the chase. Of course, that's his registered name: Joywood's Thrill of the Chase I'm pretty sure the puppy on the far right is Dundee's sister, Dottie. She was the second winningest dog of the day. She uncorks out of the gate and never lets up.

Does such a thing as "Dog Proof" flooring exist?...

I will be replacing my wall-to-wall carpeting and have tried to research new flooring, floor coverings that would be more practical for a dog. Beneath my carpeting is a solid wood floor that I can have scraped & sanded, which may turn out to be the most practical thing for me to do, but wood gets scratched & can also be slippery, absorb odors & get stained/discolored if the dog has an accident that isn't discovered in time.

Everything I've looked at seems to have some drawbacks; stone tiles are durable & cleanable, but the grout can absorb odors and the tile can be too slippery. (Tile installation might also be too expensive for me!). I've read that Pergo/laminates can have the seams lift up if liquid/urine seeps into the seams.

If I go with one of the above slippery surfaces, I'm open to using inexpensive throw rugs, that can be tossed out & replaced if necessary, but do rugs stay put or just slide around?

I would really appreciate knowing what your experience has been and what recommendations you would offer. Thanks!

Observed last night in our local dog park: "Come dog! Come! Dog, come! Come here, dog!" (Me, rubbing my temples) (Dog not doing anything) Broken record obedience training. Owner has no treats, and dog probably just hears "blah, blah, blah, blah". Owner finally gets dog to come (sheer coincidence), then gets into "sit! sit, dog! dog, sit"! (dog does nothing).....*sigh*

Another cairn spotted on television

I was watching Anthony Bourdain No Reservations on the travel network and saw a cairn on his Colombia show. My first clue was that it was barking at the fireworks so I heard it before I spotted it. Max used to bark at them exactly the same way.
