Looking For An Addition

Our boy, Jack, will be one year old on Sunday! He is the greatest joy that has entered our lives in years. We went through all the normal things in the first year of living with a Cairn. This forum was a savior to find out that all these things were normal and to find advice to deal with everything in a normal fashion. I am grateful to all that contribute here and will continue to try give input when I can, I am not an expert.

My wife and I have decided to find Jack a permanent companion. We have seen him interact with a Cairn female his age and the kindred spirit is overwhelming! It is probably the happiest that I have ever seen any creature. Seeing the two of them run, off leash, in the woods and creeks of North Carolina was wonderful. Nothing we have done; building a dog yard, doggy daycare, dog day events, adventures to the beach, etc, can compare. To that end,we are looking for a female, one year old +/- a few months. I have done considerable searching on the internet and everything seems to be in the 16 hour driving range. I'm not opposed to driving but I don't want to stress the pups. Two or three days on the road may be a bit much for an introduction. I am willing to meet half way, pay expenses and or air freight. If we have to go the puppy route we will have to wait until next spring, our work is busy this time of year. If anyone has a lead or advice I would love to hear from them. As the forum rules state, message me or e-mail (purviswr@yahoo.com). I am sure there is a way to make this happen. My boy would enjoy it so much.

stormy night, so proud of Oscar

I remember when we first adopted Oscar over a year ago and he was very afraid of storms.	Whimpered and barked in his crate. His previous owner told me he was afriad of storms and that if we held him he'd be fine. I thought that was a pretty bad way to help him deal with storms since I have a desire for sleeping at night and getting things done during the day, so I set out to get him accustomed to being calm during storms. It's a real boomer out there tonight her in Southeast PA and he is quiet as a mouse. He did let out a bark earlier, but he settled himself down without any need for correction. I went by the crate earlier to check my laundry and he was sitting up, panting a bit, but still no noise and I think he might be laying back down at this time. I can't be 100% sure because I am upstairs in my bedroom getting settled for bed, but still no noise. I am proud of him for sure, and a bit proud of myself too. I am sure his next owners will appreciate the effort we put in to bring about this positive change in him.............not to mention he no longer marks in the house =D

Ivy strikes again....

Well, my little cairn never ceases to amaze me and she is not my first cairn. Today, she decided to run through her invisible fence to run with a jogger in our neighborhood (please don't judge me..I know how many feel about the invisible fence but she is never out there without me) Anyways, she ran all the way to the top of our street. I could barely see her. I decided to get my car keys and drive to get her because she was so far away. By the time I went into the house and got my keys, she reappeared at the bottom of the driveway with her head down. I picked her up and told her a stern NO!!! I brought her inside and believe it or not, SHE PUT HERSELF INTO TIME OUT IN THE LAUNDRY ROOM FOR 2 HOURS. She knew she was bad. I learned 2 things from her today-she knows when she is bad and she knows exactly where she lives......oh and she knows how to make me melt. It is so hard to discipline her.

Ellie's Shenanigan's!

Oh, where to begin! Ellie LOVES water. When I fill the kiddie pool for the kids she's in it more than they are! I will look out and she's standing in the pool just pawing at the water, (watching the fun swirls I assume). When we turn the hose on she's right there, biting at the water.

She also loves mud. When we first put our veggie garden in with the wall-o-waters, (here in Denver we have to use these early on...they encircle the plant with vertical tubes of water, which keeps them warm, like a little green house) Ellie discovered that by jumping at and pushing them, water would spill out the top of the tubes, making wonderful mud! I refilled those more times that I can count! Twice my son has made a mud hole in the garden before it was planted and Ellie was right in it. One hole was quite deep and she was muddy up to her belly and having a ball! She now leaves the wall-o--waters alone, thank goodness!

We get foxes and coons passing through the yard and I'm not sure which one is leaving stinky presents down in the rocks by our fence. Three times now Ellie has discovered it and decided that it makes a lovely perfume ALL OVER her neck. Yesterday when we came home my daughter mentioned that she was "stinky" (she's 3) and when I looked at Ellie, I noticed her brown neck. Really?!? AGAIN?!? That's twice this week! So out I went to hose the poop away and into the tub Ellie went...again! She's getting good at sitting for baths! I need to get in the habit of checking for wildlife poop before leaving her outside. I googled the diets of both foxes and coons and both eat fish, (Ellie has a faint fragrance of fish after she rolls in this stuff.)

She likes grabbing things that are not hers and chewing on them. I will see her in our bedroom chewing on something and when I come in to investigate she grabs whatever it is and scurries under our bed! She knows I can't reach her there. She did the same thing yesterday when it was bath time! Little stinker!

She's such a cutie and a joy to have around, albiet a stinky one at times!

Vampire cairn

Angus often 'smiles' like this when we begin to play. Sometimes he's holding a toy in his paws at the same time. Tail is going at the other end. My other dogs have always had their mouths more open when in this play mode. This is new and very amusing to me.

Gotta say cairns pups are always ready for fun!

To all you Cairn Moms:

Happy Mothers Day! It is a beautiful day here today. We are still planting soybeans, but we did manage to take some time for a picnic - Dempsy got to be in his pool and had a hot dog with us. He likes it when everybody is in one place. Now it's back to planting. Hope all you cairn moms are saving a little love for your little furry boys and girls. Enjoy your day!

Dog training class?

Ellie is almost 8 mos. old. I'm not sure whether or not to sign us up for a class at Petco or Petsmart or skip it. I've tried working with her at home to "sit" but haven't spent a lot of time with it. What have you done? A class, or on your own, or a good training book? When Carolina was a puppy I took a class with her, however it was at our local rec center and that class is no longer offered. Thoughts? Thanks!

Interceptor unavailable

I wanted to know what everyone is doing for their dogs that were on Interceptor. Our vets are saying the factory shut down and they do not know when it will be available again and that once the factory starts up again it could still take three months to get it out to us. Are you switching to Heartguard? Is that the only alternative? I think going without is too risky, especially this time of year.
